Anthropogenic Global Warming Skepticism Grows Among Scientific Community

Despite the Sainted AlGore's claims to the contrary, the case for Anthropogenic Global Warming is falling apart. As scientists look more closely at the issue, more of them have become skeptical about the UN IPCC report conclusions and the measures AlGore and others say are necessary to halt it.

These skeptics aren't run of the mill pseudo-scientists or scientists commenting upon an issue outside their field of expertise. These are climatologists, meteorologists, geologist, solar astronomers, paleontologists, environmental chemists, and a host of others from a number of related scientific disciplines weighing in on the issue.

Quotes from just a few of the 650 scientists expressing skepticism about AGW, including some formerly supporters of the AGW theories:

“I am a skeptic…Global warming has become a new religion.” - Nobel Prize Winner for Physics, Ivar Giaever.

“Since I am no longer affiliated with any organization nor receiving any funding, I can speak quite frankly….As a scientist I remain skeptical...The main basis of the claim that man’s release of greenhouse gases is the cause of the warming is based almost entirely upon climate models. We all know the frailty of models concerning the air-surface system.” - Atmospheric Scientist Dr. Joanne Simpson, the first woman in the world to receive a PhD in meteorology, and formerly of NASA, who has authored more than 190 studies and has been called “among the most preeminent scientists of the last 100 years.”

Warming fears are the “worst scientific scandal in the history…When people come to know what the truth is, they will feel deceived by science and scientists.” - UN IPCC Japanese Scientist Dr. Kiminori Itoh, an award-winning PhD environmental physical chemist.

“The IPCC has actually become a closed circuit; it doesn’t listen to others. It doesn’t have open minds… I am really amazed that the Nobel Peace Prize has been given on scientifically incorrect conclusions by people who are not geologists.” - Indian geologist Dr. Arun D. Ahluwalia at Punjab University and a board member of the UN-supported International Year of the Planet

“Anyone who claims that the debate is over and the conclusions are firm has a fundamentally unscientific approach to one of the most momentous issues of our time.”- Solar physicist Dr. Pal Brekke, senior advisor to the Norwegian Space Centre in Oslo. Brekke has published more than 40 peer-reviewed scientific articles on the sun and solar interaction with the Earth.

“It is a blatant lie put forth in the media that makes it seem there is only a fringe of scientists who don’t buy into anthropogenic global warming.” - U.S Government Atmospheric Scientist Stanley B. Goldenberg of the Hurricane Research Division of NOAA.

“The Kyoto theorists have put the cart before the horse. It is global warming that triggers higher levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, not the other way round…A large number of critical documents submitted at the 1995 U.N. conference in Madrid vanished without a trace. As a result, the discussion was one-sided and heavily biased, and the U.N. declared global warming to be a scientific fact,” Andrei Kapitsa, a Russian geographer and Antarctic ice core researcher.

“Gore prompted me to start delving into the science again and I quickly found myself solidly in the skeptic camp…Climate models can at best be useful for explaining climate changes after the fact.” - Meteorologist Hajo Smit of Holland, who reversed his belief in man-made warming to become a skeptic, is a former member of the Dutch UN IPCC committee.

“All those urging action to curb global warming need to take off the blinkers and give some thought to what we should do if we are facing global cooling instead.” - Geophysicist Dr. Phil Chapman, an astronautical engineer and former NASA astronaut, served as staff physicist at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology)

There's plenty of rebuttal that can be viewed, such as this post on the New York Times Dot Earth blog.

Andrew Revkin supports that AGW is a fact, claims of the skeptics to the contrary, and that something must be done now to forestall the catastrophic effects of AGW. The comments are telling, with those trying to open the debate being labeled as “mindless contrarians”, “denialists, “distractors”, “delayers”, “crybabies”, “lowly”, “vulgar”, and “stupid”. So much for open discourse. Read the comments to the to post and you'll see what I mean. Far too many of those dismissing the skeptics out of hand appear to be letting emotion rule their opinions rather than data, evidence, a actual debate. That's never a good sign.

  1. lOOK, pardner, agW IS real and is happening. EIther get on the bus or stay at the bus stop waiting for the next one. There won't be a next one. This bus is the only way forward. You are right, nobody should be calling anybody names like stupid etc, we are all in this together, but sir, AGW is real and it's happening. It's your choice of course, if you want wait for another bus. I don't understand your thinking, but I do respect our POV.....

If you think it's a good idea, blog about this suit. if you think it's a stupid idea, blog on it that way, too. Just discuss it. Friends?

    Dan,

Global warming may be taking place, however I have serious doubts that we are the sole and major cause of it.

Too many people seem to think that climate is static, that it never changes. When it does, very few want to believe it's a natural process. Someone must be at fault. Never mind that Earth's climate has been changing continuously for millions upon millions of years.

There are too many other causative factors being ignored in regards to climate change. The one biggest factor is that great big glowing ball of gas in the sky. You know the one...the Sun.

The Sun is what is called a variable star, meaning its output changes over time. There are predictable cycles man has been observing for over 1000 years. As the Sun goes through these cycles, the effects can be felt here on Earth. To deny this is to deny the Sun has any effect on Earth's climate at all, and that is lunacy.

My contention is to focus on one small factor to the exclusion of all others is madness. To base 'curative' actions on a single factor is also madness, wasting billions, if not trillions of dollars and decades of effort to cure something that is not the cause.

Despite claims to the contrary, the question of human caused global warming is not settled. As a person dealing with the sciences every day of my life, I can tell you the hypotheses put forward by the AGW faithful are laughable. They have a little data here, a little data there, they tie it together while ignoring other possible factors and say "Here's the cause. No more discussion is needed!"

But they have poor theories, suspect data, and climate models that are so poor they can't even 'predict' the climate of the mid to late 20th century from data sets from the beginning of the century. If their models can't do that, then how can we believe them when they say that 100 years in the future the average global temps will hotter than they are now? (Hint: They can't.)

I am not denying climate change. I am denying we are the cause. And until the AGW folks can actually show me proof, show their models incorporate all data, not just the data that agrees with them, I will continue to point out their ideology has holes big enough march an army through.

  3. I see your points and you make sense too. However, you are wrong. Don't believe me, that's okay. It won't happen in our lifetime. Now all is hunky dory. It won't happen until 2500 AD....but most people don't care about 500 years from now. They just want their cake and eat it too NOW.....I understand. I used to be like that. See my ideas here:

as for AGW, not or true. Meet me in 500 years at St. Peters Gate and let's chat. Okay? SMILE

Fifty two UN IPCC scientists say AGW is real. 650 of the worlds top scientists say it's not. Knowing the reputations and CV of many of those say on both sides, I am more inclined to believe those saying "It ain't so!"
